Spheres, Rectangular Prisms, Cones and Cubes

The students used play dough to make 3D shapes. The students used models to help them determine how many vertices, edges and faces were needed.

THE BIG READ

Cutler students continued their exploration of STEAM on October 29th, Big Read Day. Classes read The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba. The story follows William, an African boy who at the age of 14 uses a few science books and some recycled materials to change how the people of his drought-plagued village live. Buddy classes learned about William’s environment and the challenges he faced. Keep the learning going at home! Here is a link to a video about William http://www.movingwindmills.org/documentary There is an adult version of the book available.

The children met with their buddies and discussed the book and worked together to design and build paper windmills.  Please let me know if you would like to borrow the class copy of The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind to read and discuss as a family.

3-D Museum

Thank you for all the wonderful 3D shapes for our museum. The class had a wonderful time sketching items from each section of our museum.  We discussed the shapes vertices, edges and faces.

Kids And Company-Together For Safety

Today, we had a very full safety lesson that I hope you will review and discuss with your children. The lesson began with a discussion of feelings The children reviewed happy and sad feelings such as content, comfortable, confused, worried and perplexed. Then we talked about okay touches and not okay touches and how those make you feel and remembering the strategy of NO-GO-TELL a trusted adult when our warning bells go off and we are feeling uncomfortable. This then led to a segment on private body parts (with proper terminology) for both the boys and girls. The last part of the lesson reviewed the difference between a swell secret(surprise) and a tell secret. Please let me know if you have any questions about the lesson. We shared with the children how important these topics were and how they were topics to be discussed at home and at school with trusted adults.

HALLOWEEN PARADE

Mark your calendars...our annual kindergarten-grade 2 Halloween parade will take place on October 31 at 9am!
  • Parents are invited to the front driveway to cheer on their costumed children. K-2 children should come dressed in as much of their costume as possible, with the rest in a labeled bag. Since costumes will not be worn for the remainder of the day, be sure your child has an appropriate change of clothing.  Please remember to emphasize non-violent costumes, with no weapons, gore or blood. Halloween School-Wide DEAM (Drop Everything and Move) will directly follow the parade outside on the hill
