Narrative Writing

We have completed a genre study of narrative mentor texts. The children did a wonderful job describing the elements of a narrative. After, we wrote our own narratives about a favorite place. Then,we worked with a partner to design our cover illustrations and choose an inviting title. We are looking forward to sharing our published pieces with you at Open House on April 15th.

Math Stations-Adding and Subtracting Strategies

 We continue to explore and practice a variety of addition and subtraction strategies.  We have been focusing on missing addends and doubles plus 1.

American Symbols

We have been learning about the Bald Eagle as part of our study of American Symbols and songs. We had a great time engineering and cutting paper to create our bald eagle display. Next, we will be making a list of adjectives that describe bald eagles which we will use to create our own list poems. We continue to recite the pledge each morning and are very enthusiastic singers of The Grand Old Flag.

Sharing and The Standards

The most popular part of our morning meeting is sharing.  This community tradition gives each student the opportunity to share something that is important.  The other students are asked to listen attentively and then to formulate a related question, connection or compliment.  The children are practicing all of the 1st grade Speaking And Listening Standards and building social relationships.

American Symbols and Songs- The Pledge Of Allegiance

 In Social Studies, we continue to learn about American symbols.  On Friday, we learned about The Pledge Of Allegiance.  We discussed the meaning of the words in the pledge.  We practiced how to show respect to the flag when reciting the pledge.

Independent Reading- Building Our Stamina

 We continue to enjoy our independent reading time.  We are able to sustain our reading session for 20 minutes. Also, we are sharing our book choices with each other.  It is a wonderful way to share your favorite books and learn about your classmates' interests.
